Updated EIGE Gender Equality Index
On the 25th of June, at a conference held in Brussels, EIGE (the European Institute of Gender Equality) launched an updated version of the European Gender Equality Index. The Index was first launched in 2013 and is composed of six core domains: work, knowledge, time, power, health and two satellite domains (Intersecting inequalities and gender-based violence). It constitute a unique statistical tool for measuring progress in gender equality in different policy areas.
The updated version includes new variables in the area of work and a composite indicator has been developed in the area of violence against women, a domain that was empty in 2013 due to lack of comparable data.
Another novelty of the updated index is additional data. When the index was first launched in 2013 it only included data from 2010. The updated version also covers data for 2005 and 2012 and therefore enables showing progress over time.
The conference was opened by Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Ms Věra Jourová. Several official representatives from Member States also participated and presented the initiatives launched in their respective countries to increase the score in several domains of the index.
